This pair of hand carved solid chestnut chairs have folk carved back panels depicting a couple in traditional Brittany costume and wooden shoes.
Brittany or Bretagne, is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The original finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Cane seats are intact, frames are solid, and this is antique furniture from about 1900. Note shrinkage separation in one panel.
Size of each chair is 18" wide, 20" deep, 42" tall and the seats are 18 1/2" high. B-C1154
