Hand-made about 1870, this historic mahogany slant top desk was said to have been made for a railroad stationmaster in upstate New York.
The drawers have beautiful hand-cut dovetails and the heavy weight brasses appear original. The finish is very good, with just enough wear to show a little age. A gallery to hold books sits above the slanted work surface, which has a rail at the bottom to hold papers or pencils.
The top section lifts off two separate bases for easier moving. Finished on all sides, there are deep moldings on this imposing antique furniture.
Measurements are 6' long, 30" wide and 39" tall, and the writing surface slopes up from 31" at the front to 34" high at the rear. Kneehole size is 33" wide and 24 1/2" tall.
