A late Georgian secretary desk with a bookcase was hand crafted about 1840 in England. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character - mars, wear and shrinkage separations from age - see photos.
Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false, they drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a "butler's desk" - in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this. Inside is a natural saddle leather writing surface and contrasting golden drawers. All drawers have tiny hand cut dovetail joints.
The removable bookcase has a working lock and shelves that are adjustable on sliding grooves. Grillwork in the doors has old wavy convex panes, two have hairline cracks, see photos.
Measurements of this historic furniture are 43" wide, 23" deep, 7' tall and the writing surface is 29" high when open.
