A Victorian 1850 period tea caddy or poy is lacquered papier mache with inlaid mother of pearl. Traces of gold leaf remain on this antique chest from England.
The lock is incomplete, two compartments inside are lined with traditional silver foil to protect valuable tea. There is crackling to the original black lacquer finish and small losses to corners, a few pieces of pearl are gone, see photos.
Size of this well preserved and shapely artifact is 10" wide, 6 1/2" deep and 6" tall.
