Hand carved of solid oak in the 1700's, this Italian "Cassone" or marriage chest could be a bench or coffee table today. Such dowry furniture was the most important family piece from the days of the Italian Renaissance.
This cassone is deeply detailed with loads of antique character - see repairs, losses, stains, warps and shrinkage separations from age. Corners have hand cut dovetail joints, iron handles and hardware are hand wrought. Every surface is hand hewn and planed. The old finish is in very fine condition with warm patina.
About 200 years ago, the base was restored and hinges replaced.
Size of this historic chest is 50" long, 22" deep and 16 1/2" tall.
