An exquisite French three piece marble mantel clock set from the 1890's includes a signed sculpture,"Cosette" from "Les Mis," after the famous book, "Les Miserables" of Victor Hugo. The statue and side urns are "spelter" or white metal alloy, similar to pewter, that has an original patinated bronze finish.
The central work of art depicts Cosette barefoot, carrying a bucket and signed by two of the famed French family of sculptors, "L. & F. Moreau." Rose marble bases are intact with dark patinated brass mounts. The brass movement keeps accurate time and runs a week on a winding.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, a silvery toned bell counts the hours and strikes the half. Signed on the back "HB, Horlogerie de Paris," the hand painted porcelain dial is worn.
The name of the jeweler that originally sold the set is painted, "Girod" of "Montereau," an ancient town near Paris on the Seine River.
The clock measures 13" wide, 7" deep and 24" tall, the urns are 6" wide, 5 1/2" deep and 15 1/2" tall.
