This Country French pewter cupboard is a close cousin of the British "Welsh Dresser," traditional dining room furniture to use as a sideboard with display for plates above. Hand carved of solid oak, there are exposed mortise and tenon joints and carved wooden pegs at the joints. Traditional dowry furniture from France, this cabinet dates from about 1880.
The top of the base cabinet has been revarnished for durability, the rest of the finish is original and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Arched door panels are raised, the right door has an original working lock. Both doors are slightly warped from age, see photos. The upper gallery is removable for easier delivery. There are shrinkage separations and knotholes in the rustic back.
Size is 51 1/2" wide, 23" deep, 89" tall and the bottom is 35" high.
