A spectacular cabinet was hand hewn of wormy walnut about 1820 in France with sculpted heads and grapevine motifs. This "dowry" cabinet would have descended with the daughter of a wealthy family. Every surface is hand planed and carved by a master.
The old finish is very well preserved and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
There is a giant working key for the huge original wrought iron door locks, another key works the drawers. Keyhole escutcheons are lost. In the center is a "secret" drawer with a false bottom and a second secret compartment underneath. All drawers have solid walnut sides with hand cut dovetail joints.
There is a plugged knot on the left side. Hand wrought iron hinges are original.
The upper section is a separate piece for easier delivery. Hand hewn, the rustic back is original on this antique furniture.
Measurements are 62" wide tip to tip, 26" deep and 86" tall.
