A "melodeon" or early version of a pump reed organ signed by famed maker, "Geo. A. Prince, Buffalo, NY, Pat. Dec 28, 1846," is genuine rosewood, and still plays remarkably well. The old finish has shrinkage separations from age, mars and stains for antique character. Waxed and buffed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its patina.
Keys are genuine ivory with some shrinkage cracks from age, a number do not play, probably from dust stuck in the brass reeds. We have done no restorations to this historic melodeon. The right pedal operates the bellows, the left is for "swell" or louder volume.
This American made musical instrument has folding lid that closes to form a table or console.
