This lovely console table opens to reveal a "melodeon" from around 1850, an ancestor of the reed organ. This instrument does not play. The genuine rosewood case has a fine old finish with warm patina and some wear and losses for antique character.
Pumping the right pedal originally played notes with brass reeds. The bellows work but do not play more than a hint of a tone, this keyboard would require restoration to work, and we have not attempted any restoration. The left pedal is the "swell," or loudness control.
We see no signature remaining on this American made parlor furniture. Original white keys are genuine elephant bone. The lid closes to form a console table, the filigree music desk is also original.
Dimensions of this picturesque musical instrument case are 52" wide, 24" deep and 31" tall when closed.
