An outstanding "S" curve roll top desk from the Victorian period about 1895 is solid quarter sawn oak. There are raised panels and subtle carved rosettes, plus a signature on a brass plaque, "A. H. Andrews, Chicago & NY."
The deep restored finish is in excellent condition, preserving mars and wear at the edges for antique character. Cast brass hardware is original on dovetailed side drawers, including a file drawer. Originally, there was no center drawer, the original cross piece was used to create a new functional center drawer.
The writing surface and pull out shelves have saddle leather inserts on this American made office furniture. There are mail slots in the sides, the roll top lock is not working.
Inside are tiny drawers, cubicles and pencil holders. The upper section is removable for easier delivery.
Dimensions are 5' wide, 34" deep, 44" tall, the desktop is 30" high, kneehole size is a generous 25" wide and 25 1/2" high.
