This wonderful bronze statue from around 1890 depicts "Orpheus," the poet and musician of Greek mythology and his lyre. His music was said to have made trees and rocks to dance, and he was famous for his attempt to retrieve his wife, Eurydice, from the underworld.
Adrien Etienne Gaudez was a famed and prolific sculptor in France, he lived 1845-1902. The artist's work is in museums across France. "Orphee" is shown with the famous three headed dog that guards the underworld.
The chocolate patina is in excellent condition with a few spots for character. A red marble plinth is original to this work of art. Overall height is 20 1/2." The overall width is about 12" and depth is about 10".
