An authentic Country French pewter cupboard from about 1860 was often called a "Welsh Dresser" in England. Hewn of solid oak and chestnut, there are chisel marks from a master carver on every surface.
The old finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, including mars and stains for character. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain its luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are shrinkage separations from age, see photos. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints. Carved wooden pegs secure the joints.
This antique Provincial furniture from southern France was traditionally part of a young woman's dowry, holding her pewter, china and linens. Upper galleries have grooves to display plates, behind are panels of fruitwood. Brass hardware and lift off hinges are original, the right door has a working lock and key. As is typical because of stone floors and walls, the bottoms of the back legs are restored.
Measurements are 50 1/2" wide at the crown, 20" deep, 89" tall and the base is 42" high.
