A magnificent "Black Forest" mantel clock was hand carved with mountain deer and Alpine motifs about 1880, signed "Bern" or Berne, Switzerland.
The original open escapement movement is signed in French "S. Martie et Cie," and keeps excellent time, runs a week on a winding and strikes the hour and the half on a silvery bell.
Three dimensional sculpture is remarkably detailed on this work of art. Black Forest carving developed over the centuries, brought income to isolated mountain dwellers in the winter where Germany and Switzerland meet.
The satiny finish is in excellent condition on this antique European clock. Measurements are 18" wide, 8" deep and 28" tall.
A similar pair of mountain deer and ram figures is priced and sold separately, call or email for availability.
