A marvelous genuine Georgian period tall chest, chest on chest or highboy dates from around 1760. Solid mahogany with matched flame grain, this classic American made furniture is well proportioned. Family records show it was saved from the Salem, Mass., fire in 1866, and listing some of its owners over the years plus appraisals of similar pieces from $15,000 to a sale at 387,500 at Sotheby's.
The old finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain its luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Drawer joints have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms. There are hand planing marks and cut nail heads. There are various shrinkage separations and small losses from age, see photos.
Brasses are over 100 years old but not original. Hand carved shell motif and flame finials are authentic.
Two separate pieces for easier moving, three lower drawers have restorations due to wear. Measurements are 37 1/2" wide, 21" deep and 81" tall.
