Hand-carved in the 1700's, this "treasure chest" trunk was also called a coffer, likely holding a young woman's dowry. Hand-wrought iron handles and hinges appear original. Solid oak, there have been many repairs and replacements over the centuries as would be expected.
Every surface is hand-hewn or planed on this antique furniture from northern Europe. Joints are secured with carved wooden pegs.
The old finish is deep and rich, the back is finished as well. Waxed and buffed, all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. The interior bottom has been replaced, the lock is missing. There are two interior compartments for valuables.
Measurements are 48" long, 22" deep and 28" tall.
