This long case or grandfather clock was hand crafted and signed "James Gard of London," about 1710 during the reign of Queen Ann. The well worn case has faded and worn hand painting in the "Chinese" manner, fashionable at the time.
A hand made brass movement has been professionally clean and oiled and keeps excellent time. There is a bell strike counting the hour and the clock runs a week on a winding. Richly engraved, the dial has filigree with faces in the corners. Gard was well known in his day as a clockmaker to aristocrats at the Queen Ann court.
There is significant wear and losses to the painting, which appears original on the oak case, see photos. The lock and key work and door glass is old and wavy.
Size of this historic time piece is 20" wide, almost 8' tall and 10" deep.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
