A set of ten dining chairs were hand carved with lion and grapevine motifs about 1890 in the mountainous Black Forest region, where France, Germany and Switzerland meet.
Solid oak, the original finish is well preserved and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are charming variations in the hand carving, especially on the crests, see photos.
Seats are newly upholstered in soft leather on this historic European furniture. Frames are tight and strong, reglued to serve another generation. There are mars at the edges and there have been numerous restorations over the years for antique character, see photos.
Measurements are 18" wide, 20" deep, 45" tall and seats are 20" high and 14" deep.
