A late Victorian or Eastlake period ship's commode chest originally had a reservoir that was filled with water, the top swung open to a sink, and the waste collected in a pan underneath.
Carved of maple with "birdseye" or curly maple and burl panels about 1870, the restored finish is in excellent condition. American made antique furniture, this was made for a first class cabin. The sink is gone and the top is secured to the base, but the upper reservoir tank is still visible.
Drawers have dovetailed joints, hardware is brass. The original beveled mirror has minor scratches and has been stripped, a new mirror is mounted behind. Panels are raised and "spoon" or chip carving is beautiful.
Size is 39" wide x 20 1/2" deep x 82" tall
