A lavish inlaid marquetry cabinet from the 1870's is almost certainly from the famed New York firm, "Herter Bros." We can find no signature, but pieces with almost identical marquetry tableaus and very similar lines have been sold as Herter. Many Herter pieces are unsigned, also since the backsplash is rebuilt, we cannot be positive.
German immigrants, the Herter brothers worked in New York City from 1864-1906 as cabinetmakers for the "Gilded Age," furnishing the White House and the Vanderbilt Mansion on 5th Avenue, among others.
In any case, this cabinet has had a very hard life. There are numerous and significant losses, mars, wear and the backsplash is rebuilt, see photos. There are only traces of original gilding. A satiny recent coat of varnish preserves the worn old finish on this American made antique furniture.
The interior is curly or "birdseye" maple, the original back has chamfered panels. A walnut door knob is an antique replacement. The base is walnut, surfaced with rosewood, elm burl, ebony and exotic species. A push button releases a spring loaded "secret" drawer.
Measurements are 5' wide, 21" deep and 53" tall.
