Handcrafted in the Baroque manner about 1890 for a palazzo in northern Italy, this magnificent secretary desk with bookcase top is a masterpiece in rosewood and ash burl with tulipwood banding and ebonized accents. The hand carved shell crest and finials are artistic. Two secret drawers swing out at the corners.
The restored finish is in excellent condition, preserving lots of mars, losses and restorations for antique patina, see photos. Original mirrors have mottled silvering for great character.
Doors and the drop front have working locks. Almost every surface is gracefully curved and shaped. The lavish interior includes crests above numerous tiny drawers and cubicles for papers. For easier transport, the upper section is removable.
Dimensions are 59" wide, 28" deep, 105" tall and the desktop is 34" high.
