Traditional Brittany design is truly inspiring in an armoire or cabinet with hand carved figures of a courting couple in a three dimensional scene of village life from about 1895. Solid oak, the incredible three dimensional sculptures and traditional spindle grillwork are picturesque.
The finish is excellent, waxed and polished, needing only a wipe with a soft dry cloth to keep its warm antique patina. Wrought iron hardware and working lock are original. Carving is all by hand, joints have wooden pegs - virtuoso workmanship is superior everywhere.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress and wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
Heirloom furniture traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry and served to store her needlework, pewter and silver. There are adjustable shelves inside, and there is a warp to the top of the door, see photos.
Measurements of this folk design furniture are 36" wide, 20" deep and 76" tall.
