Richly hand carved with jousting knights, flowers, fruit and griffins in high relief, a lavish sideboard or dowry cabinet from France dates from about 1890.
The top of the base has been restored for durability, the rest of this imposing solid walnut furniture retains its original finish in remarkably fine condition. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the warm patina.
Fluted columns are tapered. The Latin inscription means "The sign of winning." Cast brass hardware is original, locks and keys still work on the upper doors, behind are adjustable shelves. The lower door lock does not operate, the key is a handle only. Drawers have hand cut dovetails and solid oak sides.
The upper section of this sophisticated European antique is removable for easier moving and measurements are 5' wide, 22" deep, the base is 37" high and height is 95" overall.
