A traditional Korean dowry chest was hand crafted about 1900 for a bride to carry her dowry to her new home.
Two separate stacking sections were designed for portability, and are ash hardwood with curly burl panels. The original finish has been waxed and polished, so all that is needed to maintain the warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
Original brass mounts, pulls and lock are hand wrought. The interior has a worn wall paper lining to protect fine silks and embroidery for the bride.
Hand planing marks and wooden pegs instead of nails show expert construction, done entirely with hand tools.
This understated antique measures 37" wide, 17" deep, and 52 1/2" tall.
