An outstanding trunk or dowry chest from about 60 years ago is said to be from the Dutch West Indies.
The exterior is polished figured planks of mahogany with a very fine glossy finish and few dings for character, see photos. Inside is camphor wood, an aromatic specie that is naturally repellent to bugs, similar to cedar.
Heavy weight brass filigree mounts, handles and the engraved escutcheon are beautiful. A giant elaborate exposed mechanism lock and key works, but we have temporarily removed the latch inside because it automatically locks whenever the lid is closed.
Dimensions of this marvelous furniture are 50" long, 27" deep and 28" high.
