A classical bronze sculpture of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, holding a captive Cupid is after the famous design of Charles Auguste Fraikin, 1817-1893.
The rich chocolate brown patina is in excellent condition on this work of art from 1851, according to the hand written German label underneath.
Born in Belgium, Fraikin studied at the Brussels Academy for only a month before his father died, when his guardians forced him to study medicine. After practicing in a small town, he returned to sculpture, studied in Italy and was elected to the Royal Academy. Large marble versions of this statue are in the Royal Museum in Brussels and in the Hermitage Palace Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia after being shown in 1855 at the Crystal Palace in England.
Measurements are 12" across and almost 23" tall.
