Signed "David Smith of Coatsbridge," Scotland, this 1870 era tall or long case grandfather clock keeps accurate time and runs a week on a winding.
The original brass movement has been professionally cleaned and oiled, and strikes a gong counting the hour. The original hand engraved brass dial, bezel around the convex glass and pendulum have a nickel finish. The calendar dial does not work.
This distinctive tapered case shape with a round hood is typically Scottish, and was hand carved of mahogany. The old finish is in very fine condition with warm patina, there are shrinkage separations from age and minor mars at the edges for antique character. Door glass is old and wavy. The case has no key, a modern winding crank is included with this historic furniture. Coatsbridge is about 10 miles east of Glasgow. An iron and coal center in the last century, it was originally a stone age settlement. A Royal Charter was given to its Abbey in the 12th Century.
Dimensions of this elegant British clock are 20 1/2" wide, 10" deep and 6' 7" tall.

This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
