An authentic Empire period secretary desk with bookcase top dates from about 1825, and was said to be from Massachusetts. The removable upper bookcase section has original wavy glass panes. On the rough-sawn back, square nail heads are visible.
Mahogany with matched flame grain panels, the polished finish is very beautiful with gorgeous patina and antique character - there are touchups and repairs of various ages. Drawers have hand-cut dovetails, the two tiniest drawers above the writing surface have been rebuilt. On the inside of the drop front are old inkstains and a wonderful script signature, "G. Fletcher," the rest is indecipherable. The interior is accented with butternut, ash and pine.
Measurements of this exquisite American antique furniture are 42" wide, 22" deep, 6' 4" tall and the desk sloped upward from 30 1/2" high at the front edge when opened.
