This antique bed from Brittany has been adapted to fit modern king size bedding, and was hand-carved of solid chestnut and oak with folk motifs.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
A courting scene is hand carved in high relief on the headboard, the footboard depicts a country dance with musicians, and traditional garb.
The finish is excellent on this spectacular heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry. Side rails are richly carved as well, and dimensions are 6'11" wide, 7'4" long, the headboard is 5'4" tall, the footboard is 41" tall.
