A traditional Brittany dining table is hand carved with four individual figures in traditional dress supporting the top, and dates from about 1915. Solid chestnut and oak, the incredible three dimensional sculptures are fruitwood. The original satiny finish is excellent, the top has been revarnished.
This spectacular antique is part of a dowry set custom made for a prosperous seafaring family on the Atlantic coast. Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress and wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
