About 100 years old, this Chinese baby cradle is hand carved and has a removable wicker basket. The rugged frame has beautiful mitered mortise and tenon joints and graceful curves, created by a very skilled country carpenter.
There are traces of old red paint and lots of wear to show its age. Tips of the runners are worn down from where a foot pressed to rock the cradle. The hand-woven wicker basket has some damage and a charming old repair at one end, see photos.
The structure of the basket is bamboo, and this looks like something from the Biblical story of Moses in the bullrushes in Egypt. Size is 3 1/2' long, 21" wide and 19" tall.
