A hand hammered brass "alms dish" or collection plate may also have been used as a finger bowl basin before the common use of forks in the later 1600's.
This antique is very similar to one in the Victorian and Albert Museum in London, dated as late 1400's or early 1500's. Theirs has sharper detail and less wear, but is remarkably similar, indicating the same anonymous maker, in the area where Flanders, Belgium and Germany meet.
The British museum's description for accession number M.125-1937 is included. Holding a wreath, the female figure is presumed to be Flora, the classical Roman goddess of flowers and emblem of spring. Her breasts are worn through from centuries of polishing. The hanging hook is later on this European antique bowl.
