Signed "James Last of Stalham," England, this wonderful Georgian period tall case or grandfather clock from around 1800 is in excellent working condition.
The mahogany case has inlaid banding and the old finish is in very fine condition with a few mars at the edges for antique character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm luster.
The brass 8 day movement has been oiled and keeps accurate time, striking the hour on a bell. Brass filigree on the dial includes angel heads, numerals are hand engraved and painted. The charming hand painted moon dial has losses, see photos. A lock in the door works, the winding crank appears original on this stately furniture.
An unusual crest surmounts the hood, which has fluted columns with gilt bronze capitals.
Stalham is a picturesque market town in Norfolk on the River Ant just four miles from the east coast, and is noted for its boatyards and windmills. Dimensions are 20" wide, 10" deep and 8' 6" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
