There are stains, wear and fold marks as shown to this early 1700's antique map of Alsace between Germany, Switzerland & France. It is signed by one of the era's most famous cartographers, "Mattheus Seutteri" in Latin.
The German publisher and engraver, George Mattaus Seutter lived in Augsburg 1678-1757. The son of a goldsmith, he apprenticed in Nuremburg. He went into business for himself in 1707, so this map dates from that date or after. His maps, atlases and globes are justly celebrated, one of his globes sold for $27,500 in Vienna last year.
Engraved and printed on paper, borders are hand colored. The simple frame is perhaps 100 years old and has a little wear. On the back is an inscription by the seller and framer that is simply not true. (Imagine our shock at finding a dishonest antique dealer.)
Overall size of this richly decorated antique map with Latin inscriptions is 22" wide and 25" tall.
