A hand engraved silver pocket match safe or "vesta" (short match) box dates from about 1880. There are tiny unknown hallmarks as shown, we assume this is continental European silver, often 800 or 850 rather than the English sterling "925/1000" standard of purity.
There is a monogram on this antique, plus dings, mars and wear as shown. The gold wash inside was to prevent chemical reactions with the matches.
This box kept matches safe and dry in an age where they were used for lighting as well as smoking or starting fires. Ribbed engraving on the bottom was used for striking matches.
Measurements of this enchanting box are 3" long, 1 3/4" wide and 3/4" tall.
