Unrestored and original, this exquisite Victorian period combination lap or travel desk and sewing box dates from about 1860. Well worn with lots of antique patina, the case is burl walnut with losses and wear, see photos.
Genuine mother of pearl inlay includes a presentation plate on the top that was never engraved plus marquetry designs inside the box. The sewing compartment in tattered silk has a lift out silver foiled tray. Under the lid is the original gold leaf tooled leather border. An angled writing area has compartments for inkwells and pens, plus stationery storage underneath.
Size of this English travel case when closed is 12" wide, 9" deep and 5 1/2" tall, open size is 12" x 24."
