This locking box for tea, called a "poy" is an authentic example of Victorian hand-made papier mache art.
The box is all original - it has black lacquer inlaid with mother of pearl, then hand painted and embossed with genuine gold leaf. There is wear to the finish plus small losses at the edges.
The interior has remains of the silvery foil lining that kept valuable tea leaves fresh, with a lock for security.
This sweet little antique could be American or English, and dates from about 1860. Dimensions are 8 1/2" long, 6" deep and 5" tall.
