A spectacular Empire or Biedermeier secretary desk has a cylinder roll top and dates from the 1820's. Entirely hand-crafted in northern Europe, this historic desk has pure lines characteristic of the period.
The polished mahogany finish has a silky luster and is in excellent condition. Three separate sections stack together. Drawers and case have hand-cut dovetails. Some of the locks operate, some do not. The pull out writing surface has a leather topped adjustable book easel, plus sliding lids over letter compartments. There is a "secret" drawer above. In the upper section is a spoon rack - a cup of coffee was never far away and always needed sugar.
The clean lines of Biedermeier design inspired later Art Deco styles, as is clear from this splendid example. Workmanship is exemplary, the subtlety and fit of each piece is remarkable.
Measurements of this museum-worthy antique are 49" wide, 24" deep, 88" tall and the writing surface is 32 1/2" high.
