Artwork from the 1890's, these authentic bronzes have beautiful original dark chocolate brown patina. Entitled "Campesinas," this elegant pair of farmers have extravagant garb. The lady bears grapes in her apron and a vine over her shoulder, the gentleman carries his cloak on one shoulder, and a sheaf of wheat. Richly detailed with flowing drapery, both figures are naturalistically caught in mid stride.
The similar wooden bases are later, and overall height is about 17."
Alfred Jean Halou was born in Blois in 1875, a beautiful city in the Loire Valley west of Paris, known for its chateau. He studied at L'ecole des Baux Arts in Paris, and also with Auguste Rodin, remembered for his "Thinker." A founding member of the Salon d 'Automne, Halou has a famous Nymphe bronze in the museum of Lyons. A street is named for him in Blois, and he died in Paris in 1939. The foundry name is also stamped into each base, "A. D. Delafontaine."
