Signed by famous French sculptor, "Auguste Moreau," a beautiful carved marble statue from about 1900 shows a young woman teaching her little sister to read. A book is open to the alphabet and a picture of a "Moulin" or windmill.
This French work of art was expertly hand carved from a single block of marble. The naturalistic pose is exquisite - both girls show deep concentration and affection. There are small chips to the base plus repairs and touchups to fingers and toes, see photos.
Moreau won the Medaille D'Or," or Gold Medal at an International Exposition. August Louis Mathurin Moreau (1834-1917) was one of the best known artists of the celebrated Moreau family of sculptors. He worked in Paris from 1861-1910 during the Art Nouveau period.
Size is just over 24" tall and 14" across.
