Carved about 1880 by an immigrant from England, this blanket chest with drawers was called a "mule" chest.
Solid mahogany and poplar, the deep hand detailing includes a shell and griffin crest, rope moldings and ball and claw feet.
The old finish has warm antique patina with just enough mars and dings for character, and has been revarnished. Brass pulls, handles and mounts are original except for one replaced bail on this wonderful furniture.
Drawers and the case corners have hand cut dovetails. Inside is a small compartment for treasures and the interior was lined with cedar many years ago.
This American made trunk measures 49" long, 22" deep and 28" tall.
