A classic tall case or grandfather clock from about 1910 softly plays a melody on 9 resonant chime tubes.
Signed "Jacques, US Patent," this exceptional quality clock is a product of Charles A. Jacques. Born in France in 1855, he served in the French army before coming to New York. He invented several improvements on the tube chime clock during a turbulent career, and died in NYC in 1920.
The mahogany case has its original finish with some mars and dings as shown. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its antique patina.
The brass 8 day movement has been professionally cleaned, oiled and adjusted - it keeps excellent time. A variation on the familiar Westminster chimes from Big Ben in London play on each quarter hour and on the hour. There is also a count on the hour and silent levers for both strike and melody. Although the dial shows other tunes, this clock movement never played them.
Measurements of this historic New York made clock are 26" wide, 17" deep and 77 1/2" tall.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
