A traditional hand-carved Japanese wedding bed was often called an "Opium Bed" because they were also used in opium dens to lie about and smoke.
This Asian furniture is rosewood, ash and pine, and the finish is very good. There are delicate filegree panels and reverse paintings on glass, the oval mirror is wavy and original.
The rugged base is two separate pieces and upper sections with spindle galleries and clothes pegs can be dismantled for moving. The floor inside is a replacement, a foam mattress or futon could be fitted if desired, size would be 5' x 6.'
Dating from about 1900, this fascinating Oriental antique measures 6'7" long, 5'8" deep, 7'1" tall, and the floor is 20"above the floor.
