A spectacular Empire period poster bed from about 1825 has been adapted to fit a king size mattress as shown. Solid mahogany and birch are hand carved with classical acanthus motifs. The silken finish is in excellent condition, enhancing beautiful "ribbon" grain on the rebuilt headboard.
Original posts were carved from single tree trunks and have small shrinkage separations from age. Originally a "rope" bed, wooden pegs are visible on the side rails, which have been extended. The frame bolts solidly together and completely disassembles for easier moving on this antique American made East Coast furniture.
A center rail and two upholstered platforms or pallets are included to use instead of spring units to support a standard king size mattress, the demonstrator mattress in photos is 10" thick. Measurements are 76" wide, 91" long and posts are 7' 9" tall.
