Madonna & Child or Santos Antique Wooden Sculpture

A masterful work of art, this wood madonna and child sculpture is often called a "Santos" or saint in Spanish. There are traces of old gesso and paint plus wood worm holes suggesting that this statue dates from the late 1700's.

The baby has missing fingers and a hand that looks replaced at a later date. Expertly carved of a fine grain wood, perhaps pine, the separate plinth or base is oak, attached with carved wooden pegs and probably original.

This antique figure is unrestored, and has beautiful patina of the ages, overall height is 14."
