A ruggedly hewn oak trunk or chest from around 1800 looks like a pirate's "treasure chest." Skillfully hand crafted in northern Europe, corners have hand cut dovetails and carved wooden pegs secure the joints.
Hardware is original wrought iron on this picturesque furniture. Inside is a small compartment for valuables, the lock is missing. There is a hand painted "Anno 1780" date, which could be correct, but the illegible inscription and swirly decoration appear to be later.
The finish is well preserved with warm antique patina. Waxed and buffed, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its rustic luster.
Size is 50" long, 24" deep and 30" high.
