A lovely portrait of a young lady in a hat is signed by the prominent English portrait painter, "John St. Helier Lander 1907." Original artistry in oil paint on canvas, the gold frame and oval inner liner frame appear original. Canvas is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage that we can see.
The unknown beautiful subject is serious and thoughtful, she wears a hat of the period and has a flower on her dress.
Artist St. Helier Lander was born on the Isle of Jersey Oct. 19, 1868 and died in Surrey February 12, 1944. He was given his first paintbox by the famous actress Lillie Langtry, who was the mistress of the future King Edward VII.
In 1923, the artist received a silver medal at the Paris Salon, and received his first commission from the Royal Family of England. His painting of the Prince of Wales in polo garb made St. Helier Lander famous and was admired by the King and Queen, who requested a copy for Buckingham Palace. Subsequent works include portraits of Kings George V and George VI and many others in British palaces and museums.
On the back of the canvas is a stamp from a London art supply store. The frame has appropriate antique patina, with some wear, touchup and shrinkage separations from age - see photos. Canvas size is 26" x 32" and the frame is 32" x 38" overall.
