Carved of solid quarter sawn oak about 1870, this slant top desk is standing or stool height. The rich dark finish is excellent with very minor mars.
Large drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and original carved pulls. The gallery for books at the rear is also hand dovetailed on this very well made American furniture.
This Victorian period antique could have been a prop in the famous Melville story, "Bartleby the Scrivener" or Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Pencils were made with six flat sides so they wouldn't roll away on desks like this.
Measurements are 57" wide, 29" deep, 50" tall and the top slopes up from 44" high at the front.
