Signed 1848 Antique Folk Art Needlework Sampler

Hand stitchery is exquisite on this dated 1848 needlework sampler, signed "Pauline Augustine Kugler." The natural linen back ground contrasts with unfaded vividly colored needlework.

We did not remove the textile from the frame, which is about 50 years old, custom matted in Milwaukee, WI.

In addition to the full name, there is a monogram "P. K." and faint numerals across the bottom.

We assume this to be American work by a girl from a German speaking family. A relative attached a note to the back saying Pauline was "born in 1832." She would then have been about 16 when this work of traditional folk art was created.

The glass is 17 1/2" x 11," overall size is 21 1/2" wide and 15" tall.
