A spectacular Renaissance dowry cabinet was hand carved of solid oak in eastern France around 1880.
Three dimensional sculptures include lion heads, female figures, fruit and nuts plus deeply carved moldings.
Often called "Black Forest" furniture, it would have held the dowry of an affluent daughter for her marriage - silver, pewter and linens.
Today it in an imposing china cabinet or bookcase. The top surface has been varnished for durability, the rest of the original wax finish is very well preserved.
It has been waxed and buffed so all that is needed to maintain its warm antique luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. Original glass is cut and etched by the hand of an artisan, there are scratches at the edges, see photos.
Shelves in the removable upper section adjust on wooden supports. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints on this European historic antique. The back is also paneled in solid fine grained oak.
Measurements are 58" wide at the crown, 49" wide in the body, 23" deep, 8' 1" tall and the base is 41" high.
